MaterialHand-hammered copper

Oumuamuanesque is a functional contemporary sculpture by Antwerp-based artist Marius Ritiu, crafted in copper and conceived as collectible functional art that merges design with sculptural presence. Inspired by ʻOumuamua, the first known interstellar object observed passing through our Solar System, the work imagines a fragment from deep space transformed into an object of everyday use. Hand-hammered from copper, its elongated, faceted form recalls both the enigmatic silhouette of the celestial visitor and the weathered surface of a meteorite, while retaining the warmth and tactility of a meticulously crafted object. Every hammer mark remains visible, preserving the physical memory of its making and allowing labour, process and time to become integral elements of the sculpture. As a functional work, Oumuamuanesque invites physical engagement, collapsing the immense distances of the cosmos into the intimacy of human experience. The piece reflects on the extraordinary journey of an object that travelled for millions of years between the stars before briefly crossing our cosmic neighbourhood, transforming this astronomical event into a meditation on travel, encounter and the unknown. By dissolving the boundaries between furniture, sculpture and imagined extraterrestrial artifact, Oumuamuanesque embodies Ritiu's ongoing exploration of craftsmanship, cosmology and material transformation, suggesting that even the most familiar objects can carry echoes of the infinite universe beyond our own.
