Meteor Seat II
Meteor Seat is a functional contemporary sculpture by Antwerp-based artist Marius Ritiu, crafted in hand-hammered copper and conceived as collectible functional art that dissolves the boundary between sculpture and design. Simultaneously a usable seat and a contemplative object, the work evokes the appearance of a meteorite that has travelled across the vastness of space before coming to rest within the intimacy of a domestic or architectural setting. Its rugged, faceted form recalls celestial fragments shaped by unimaginable pressures, while the warm luminosity of copper grounds these cosmic associations in the physical reality of the material. Every hammer mark remains visible across the surface, preserving the memory of the artist's gestures and allowing time, labour and process to become intrinsic elements of the work itself. As the copper gradually develops a natural patina, the sculpture continues to evolve, recording its own passage through time much like a meteor bears the traces of its journey through the atmosphere. By inviting viewers to sit upon what appears to be a fragment of the cosmos, Meteor Seat transforms an everyday act into an encounter with geological and astronomical time, proposing that functional objects can also become sites of reflection on humanity's place within an ever-expanding universe.
