Hot Seat From Space is a functional contemporary sculpture by Antwerp-based artist Marius Ritiu, crafted in copper and designed as collectible functional art, merging design and sculptural presence. Made in hand-hammered copper, it emphasizes craftsmanship, material integrity and contemporary sculptural form, while evoking the appearance of an object that has travelled through the cosmos before finding its place within the domestic environment. Its irregular, meteor-like surface bears the visible traces of thousands of hammer strikes, preserving the physical memory of its making and allowing process, labour and time to remain embedded within the work. Balancing utility with poetic speculation, Hot Seat From Space invites viewers to engage with it both physically and imaginatively, transforming the simple act of sitting into an encounter with an object that seems suspended between the terrestrial and the extraterrestrial. The sculpture was presented as part of Dernier Cri Gallery's inaugural exhibition in New York City, where it embodied Ritiu's ongoing investigation into the intersection of craftsmanship, cosmology and functional sculpture. By dissolving the boundaries between furniture, sculpture and imagined artifact, Hot Seat From Space proposes that everyday objects can become portals to contemplation, connecting the intimacy of human experience with the immeasurable scale of the universe.
