At The Mercy Of Nature (Sisyphus Part X)
At the Mercy of Nature (Sisyphus Part X) is a contemporary sculptural work by Marius Ritiu, part of the Sisyphus series, engaging themes of scale, mythology, and collective experience through material-driven public art. It has been shown at the Beaufort Triennial in Oostende, Belgium in 2024, where it entered into dialogue with the coastal landscape and the elemental forces that continuously sculpt it—wind, salt, erosion, and time—framing the work less as a fixed object than as a participant in ongoing geological theatre. In this context, the sculpture extends the Sisyphean narrative of persistence and return, positioning human effort within larger cycles of environmental pressure and transformation, where meaning is not stabilized but repeatedly negotiated, like a shoreline redrawn with each tide.
